1. Theophilus London Checked Key Club Off My To Do List

Can’t say I’ve ever been frisked upon entry at a concert, but as this blog constantly reminds me (and hopefully you), there’s a first time for everything. After a minor rub down outside the door at Key Club we crossed the threshold into the famed spot on the Sunset Strip and elbowed our way through a sea of high tops, wide brimmed fedoras, PBRs and ice (the kind that goes around your neck). It was like the first day of college when you scan the masses at orientation trying to figure out where you belong in the eclectic array before contentedly resigning to the reality that your context has the power to unify you.

Who did we gather for? This guy…

The Smith’s references are unashamedly unsubtle. But, I kind of love him all the more for it. This Charming Mixtape with a track on it called Hum Drum Town? I think Morrissey just made a severely depressing statement in a really cheerful way somewhere (his seemingly standard response to all things in life).

    The night consisted of this…

(skip to 3:06 to watch a girl make her mother really proud).

Although ‘Gurls, Girls, Money’ isn’t really my steez, ‘Groove Me’ is. If booty dancing and Curtis Mayfield funk haven’t won you over, watch below.

Boy’s got style, boy’s got charm, boy’s got talent—no contest. Apart from hearing he’s from Brooklyn via a friend, I have been able to find relatively little info on this guy. Everything else I know I learned from his twitter feed which mentions DJ Mia Moretti, SXSW, babes, touring, Freeganism, thrifting and Dirty Money. There’s definitely more to the man—-but the more is still a mystery.

I can’t take off without a couple lines on Key Club. I assumed there were some great 60’s and 70’s rock connections with the space, and I assumed right. Bill Gazzari opened Gazarri’s in the 60’s on the site where Key Club now stands. The Doors, Alice Cooper, Tina Turner and Tom Petty graced its stage amongst others. It became Billboard Live in the 90’s and is now Sunset Live Presents Key Club.

And, to quell your untameable curiosity, YES, Alien Ant Farm is playing May 12th. You can now sleep in peace. Your welcome. Goodnight.
