1. La Descarga: The First Time I Decided to Inhale a Cigar…No. Bueno.

American citizen? Can’t travel to Cuba? Head to the corner of Western and Santa Monica Blvd—you’ll forget all about how the embargo affects your life. A little slice of Havana right in the heart of Hollywood.

La Descarga, Spanish for unload/unleash/unburden, will make you do just that. The night I went it was an hour until closing time so the crowd had cleared and all that was left were the rummed up salsa dancers leaving their flashy and impressive mark on the dance floor. True Cubans, no doubt. My roommate—quite the dancer himself whipped me around and in doing so, totally annihilated my fears of comparison to the professionals. He also made me bash my head into someones shoulder but I quickly forgave. There’s no room for upset on a dance floor.

The atmosphere is rich, warm and sensual. The rum selection is no joke. And the cigars in the back room are only the best. Just don’t inhale. My cigar smoking partner back in Michigan would hang his head in shame. It was an accident, and I cried.

Check this place for a little bit of this…

Plus a little bit of this…

And I guess this also happens… unfortunately, not while I was there—

    A definite must.
