1. Malibu Inn: Vintage Mood. Epic Food.

Not my catchy headline-no, no. That’s all them. The ‘Vintage Mood. Epic Food.’ byline on the Malibu Inn sign was enough to get us to flip a u-ey on the PCH.

After a heavenly afternoon at El Matador State Beach, the Detroit trio (my grad school bound brother, writer/stylist/creative force of nature friend, Angela, and little old me) were hankering for some memorable menu items as well as some beachy ambiance. The Malibu Inn monkier and subtext gave us reason to believe we would find exactly what we were looking for.

This coastline space was once owned by Mr. Neil Young and has remained a local favorite since the days of Gloria Swanson. Lucky for us, we showed up on a Monday just after 4pm and caught the Industry Night specials. Half off select menu and drinks items. We went for the Fried Calamari, Buffalo Soldiers hot wings, Homemade Guac and the Mescaline Hit. No mom, I wasn’t doing peyote, that’s just the name of the salad. Massive thumbs up to all.

The Mango Mojito is in absolute must (but if I remember right, it wasn’t included in the specials).

Reopened after a brief hiatus, Top Chef season 7 contestant, Angelo Sosa, has refined the menu and designer, Andrew Alford, threw in the perfect amount of kitsch. My favorite part? The women’s bathroom. Who doesn’t want to look at this while they empty their bladder?

Malibu Inn was the perfect postlude to our beach day. For the best deals, hit it on a Tuesday. Two dollar tacos and $3 tequila shots. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll be privileged enough to be there when Jonny Depp’s look-a-like is working. Tried to snap a covert style Blackberry shot, but my companion’s looks of disdain reminded me that creepy isn’t couth.
